Remove friction at the moment of insight

A customer often notices a missing capability while they are trying to complete a task. Requiring a separate account at that moment asks them to pause, register, verify, and return later. Most will not. A public board with anonymous submissions captures more of that useful, in-context feedback.

The tradeoff is that lower friction also lowers the barrier for spam, advertising, and low-quality submissions. The right answer is not to put a login wall back in front of every customer; it is to layer focused protection behind the form.

Use several small protections together

No single anti-spam measure catches everything. A practical public board combines a human-verification challenge, rate limits, automated moderation, and owner controls. Each layer handles a different failure mode while legitimate visitors see very little extra work.

  • Turnstile helps distinguish real visitors from automated traffic before a submission or vote is accepted.
  • Multiple rate limits reduce repeated submissions from the same browser or network without blocking ordinary participation.
  • Text and screenshot moderation can block content that violates guidelines when the moderation service responds; a service outage should not silently prevent a legitimate request.
  • Owners need a clear way to hide, mark spam, ban repeat sources, and review public reports.

Make the form specific enough to invite quality

A blank field labeled ‘Feedback’ produces vague messages. A short prompt such as ‘What are you trying to do, and what would make it easier?’ gives customers a useful structure without forcing a long form. If screenshots are useful for your product, make them optional and state the file-size limit near the control.

Show similar requests before submission. This gives customers a chance to vote for an existing idea instead, which improves the board’s signal and saves them from restating the same problem.

Be transparent about what happens next

Anonymous does not need to mean opaque. Explain whether new requests publish immediately or go to review, and show a clear confirmation after submission. If content is blocked by moderation, tell the visitor that the board could not accept it because it appears to violate the usage guidelines—without exposing the underlying detection details.

For requests that are accepted, use the public board and status updates to show the team has seen the theme. This creates a visible feedback loop even when you do not collect email addresses or promise individual replies.
